Backflow Direct was established in 2012 to design and manufacture a revolutionary backflow prevention product line it would later call the Deringer. The Deringer product line is now the smallest, lightest, most economical, best performing and only all stainless steel backflow prevention valve…and yes it is built in the USA. Backflow Direct was founded by the Powell family previous owners of Ames Company and Hunter Innovations creators of the Silver Bullet, Colt and Maxim backflow prevention product line. This ownership for more than 35 years has been responsible for the introduction of every major design and marketing advancement in the backflow industry. Such advancements include single body housing, fabricated valve housing, stainless steel construction, large diameter single access port, differentially loaded check, independent check module, butterfly shut off valve, always resulting in shorter, lighter and better preforming products. Backflow Direct is introducing the Deringer line with a radical and game changing marketing strategy selling our products directly to contractors, installers and testers...our customers. Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Doug Powell is the founder, majority shareholder and CEO of BACKFLOW DIRECT
responsible for product design and company development. He designed his first backflow preventer, the
Ames Silver Bullet, in 1989 and continues in this latest endeavor to advance the design features and
performance of backflow prevention products.
Doug has a history of business success as an owner of Ames Company (acquired by Watts Industries in 1996), as the founder of Hunter Innovations, developer of the Colt and Maxim backflow product lines (acquired by Watts Industries in 2002) and as an owner of MetalCloak a successful manufacturer and direct marketer of aftermarket off-road vehicle products.
Doug has reunited an amazing team of individuals specifically skilled in the design, production and marketing of backflow prevention products. This team is poised to quickly take BACKFLOW DIRECT from a startup to the industry leader.

Chief Finacial Officer (CFO)
Kent Powell is a founder and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of BACKFLOW
DIRECT, responsible for all financial operations.
Kent became the President of Ames Company, Inc. in 1978 and in 1983 Ames introduced its first backflow valve. The new valve featured fabricated epoxy coated steel that was then a technological breakthrough allowing for a dramatic reduction in manufacturing cost and weight.
Under his leadership in 1985 Ames introduced the “Silver Bullet”. This products' technological breakthroughs included a fabricated stainless steel valve housing, single access port and low flow loss check modules. The Silver Bullet was much shorter and lighter while producing a substantially improved friction loss curve over available products in the industry. By 1990, the Silver Bullet became the large diameter, 2½” to 10”, backflow industry leader.
His commitment to innovation in the backflow industry continues today with BACKFLOW DIRECT. Kent is excited to once again work with his sons to revolutionize the backflow market. The “Deringer” is the next breakthrough in backflow providing contractors and end users with the most economical and best performing product.
Chief Acquisitions Officer (CAO)
Scott Powell is a founder and the Investor Relations Officer (IRO) of
BACKFLOW DIRECT, responsible for capital funding, corporate structure and new business development.
Scott will focus on the strategic acquisition of waterworks product manufacturers compatible with the
direct to customer sales model.
In 2001, as the founder and CEO of SACjet (a general aviation company owned by the Powell Family), Scott acquired the Sacramento Executive Jet Center a general aviation fuel and flight support company located at the Sacramento Executive Airport (SAC).
In 2005, Scott acquired the rights to general aviation fuel and flight support at the Sacramento International Airport (SMF), requiring SACjet to construct a 55,000 square foot private aviation terminal and hanger. SACjet began operations in this second local as The Sacramento Capital Jet Center in 2006.
In 2013, Scott acquired the rights to general aviation fuel and flight support at Mather Airport by committing to more than $7 million in airport capital improvements including a new private aviation terminal, hangar space, and executive offices. SACjet began operations in this third local as The Sacramento Mather Jet Center in April of 2014.
SACjet is now the exclusive supplier of fuel and flight support in the greater Sacramento area to the NBA, UPS, FAA, Intel and hundreds of international and domestic flight departments.
Scott has been active member of the board of directors of the other Powell family investments including Ames Company, Hunter Technologies Inc., and Backflow Direct.
Chief Operation Officer (COO)
Aaron Colacchia joins the BACKFLOW DIRECT team as the Chief Operations
Officer (COO) responsible for all business operations.
Aaron has over 25 years of experience in design, engineering and manufacturing of backflow prevention products.
In 1988 he started with Ames Company as a design and manufacturing engineer involved in the development of the complete Silver Bullet backflow prevention product line. He succeeded in this role up to Watts Industries' acquisition of Ames in 1996.
In 1997 he became the COO of Hunter Innovations, the developer of the Colt/Maxim product line where he served in this capacity until Watts acquired Hunter Innovations in 2003. Aaron joined the Watts organization where he served as the Plant Manager for Ames (a subsidiary of Watts) until 2008.
In 2009 Doug Powell and Aaron Colacchia partnered in the acquisition of MetalCloak a manufacturer of high end aftermarket off-road vehicle products. Under new ownership the traditional tiered marketing approach for MetalCloak was immediately changed to an internet based, direct to customer sales model. MetalCloak has averaged annual sales growth of more than 100% since the transition to a direct to customer sales model.
The backflow prevention industry meets all of the parameters necessary for a successful direct to end user internet sales model. Aaron's experience with the backflow industry and the direct sales model is the perfect combination to lead BACKFLOW DIRECT to the position of industry leader.
Matt Longo joins the BACKFLOW DIRECT team as the PRODUCTION MANAGER
responsible for the manufacture and quality control of the Deringer backflow prevention product line.
Matt has over 5 years of experience as a Production Manager at Hunter Innovations, developer of the Colt/Maxim backflow product lines, acquired by Watts (2002). He followed the acquisition of Hunter Innovations, to Ames Company, where for more than 8 years he was a Production Manager responsible for the manufacture of the Colt/Maxim backflow prevention product lines.
His nearly 14 years of experience in the manufacture of backflow prevention products will be critical as we strive to become the market leader in the backflow prevention industry.
Director Of Research Development
Lou Maligad joins the BACKFLOW DIRECT team as the DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT, responsible for prototyping, evaluation, testing and approvals of all backflow prevention
Lou has been an R & D engineer, technician, or machinist in the backflow industry for more than 20 years. He has utilized his talents to complete the development and approval of hundreds of backflow prevention products for Ames Company, Hunter Innovations, Watts Industries, and now BACKFLOW DIRECT.
The BACKFLOW DIRECT team could not ask for a more skilled or experienced team member to assure the successful completion of the BACKFLOW DIRECT Deringer Backflow Prevention Product Line.
Director Of Media Development
Gary Weaber joins the BACKFLOW DIRECT team as the DIRECTOR OF MEDIA
DEVELOPMENT, responsible for the development and maintenance of commerce website, social platforms and
Gary has degrees in Graphic Design including Illustration and Animation from Sierra College and was in the Animation/Illustration Program at San Jose State. Gary has over 13 years of experience in media production management and graphic design, designing everything from business logos to websites to brochures to billboards.
BACKFLOW DIRECT's sales model "direct to customer" requires extensive media development in the form of website product graphics, installation instruction videos, servicing videos, specification sheets and much more. Gary's skill and experience are perfect for the needs of BACKFLOW DIRECT.
Director Of Sales & Marketing
Brad Scott joins the Backflow Direct team as the DIRECTOR OF SALES AND
MARKETING, responsible for maintaining a positive and efficient sales experience under our direct sales
model, creating new and dynamic marketing strategies for the Deringer Line, providing technical and
customer support, and contributing to the assembly of the Backflow Direct ASSOCIATE PROGRAM.
Brad started in the backflow industry at the age of 14 years old assisting his father in backflow repairs and installations. Shortly after graduating high school Brad became a certified backflow tester through the California/Nevada chapter of the American Water Works Association. In 2007, alongside his father, Brad assisted in opening Backflow Technologies, a Sacramento based sales and service company strictly dedicated to backflow.
Over the next seven years Brad gained comprehensive knowledge and experience in backflow sales and consulting, troubleshooting technical problems for testers/contractors in the field and spending many hours doing testing, repairs and installations. It is through this broad skill set and extensive background in the backflow industry that Brad will make a great addition to the Backflow Direct team.
Sales & Technical Support
Katherine Hartsgrove joins the Backflow Direct team as an inside sales and customer service representative. Katherine comes to us with 8+ years experience in the Backflow/Fire sprinkler field. After Graduating from ITT Tech she worked as a designer for residential and commercial fire sprinkler companies in the Sacramento area. She then spent several years in sales for a local Backflow wholesaler and then onto a major Backflow manufacturer. She comes to us with a wealth of Backflow knowledge and experience and will be a valuable member of our team. As our Inside sales leader she will be supporting our outside sales team as well as providing customer support in the office. As the business grows we will be utilizing her management skills to more effectively provide the best customer service in the industry.
